Center for Oceans Policy and Law and Management of the Chinese  Southeastern Waters

The idea to  establish center for oceans policy and law at Xiamen University began with the  start of the 21th century. After a year of preparation, on January 15, 2002,  XUM-COLS was formally established in the School of Law, Xiamen University and  began operation within the institutional framework of the School of Law and  other related institutes of Xiamen University. After two years in operation, the  university decided to expand the center to include research on oceans policy  under the School of Law and Ocean and Environment School, Xiamen University. On  Nov.27th, 2003, it was formally renamed the Center for Oceans Policy and Law  (XUM-COPL).

In 2005, the  center began publication of China Oceans Law Review. Given the importance of  proper management of China’s Southeastern Waters, the center was once again  renamed to the Center for Oceans Policy and Law and Management of the Chinese  Southeastern Waters, thereby combining and taking advantage of the excellent  legal, interdisciplinary and research facilities of Xiamen University in order  to make lasting contributions to the management of the Chinese Southeastern  Waters and to oceans policy and law.
