The International Conference on“China and the Development of International Dispute Resolution in the Context of the
OBOR Construction” is to be held in Xi’an,China, the eastern starting point of the Silk Road, on 1 November 2016 to
commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Silk Road Institute for International and Comparative Law (SRIICL) at Xi’an Jiaotong University.
The OBOR (“One Belt One Road”) Initiative, which was first proposed by the Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, has become the most important international strategy of the current Chinese administration. It includes the“Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” Initiatives, both of which aiming at developing close “win-win” relationship with countries along and beyond the traditional continental and maritime silk roads. The SRIICL was formally established in 2006 with the aim of promoting rule of law throughout the world and creating a research environment pursuing “innovation, excellence, openness and harmony” in international and comparative legal studies. It houses a good international law library，the editorial office of The Chinese Journal of Comparative Law published by the Oxford University Press and several English and
Chinese monograph series on international law. The SRIICL researchers have been undertaking substantial studies on the OBOR Initiative, providing systematic research support for the Chinese and foriegn governments on the negotiation of certain key investment and energy treaties.
The conference will consist of a session on the International Dispute Resolution system in general, with an emphasis on the reform of the ICJ and the interaction among different international courts and tribunals, and five sessions on the dispute resolution in international trade, international investment, international crimes, international commerce and the law of the sea respectively. The Conference will gather leading scholars and practitioners in the above fields debating on reforms and interactions of the most important international courts and tribunals in the world. His Excellency Judge James Crawford（Honorary Director of the SRIICL）and Her Excellency Judge Xue Hanqin, Judges of the ICJ have both confirmed to speak at the conference.
