Lecture on Hot Issues of Maritime Law from the Perspective of the CMI 40th Session of Congress
Published: Mon, Apr 1 2013 12:00 AM Views:1840On the evening of March 30, well-known law professor WU Huanning was invited to the Nanqiang Academic Lecture of Xiamen University where she gave a lecture titledHot Issues of Maritime Law from the Perspective of the CMI 40th Session of Congressfor interested students.
Professor Wu led an in depth discussion with attending teachers and students on issues and topics presented at the 40thInternational Maritime Committee (CMI) annual meeting in Beijing. After a brief background introduction to the CMI meeting, Prof. WU, citing CMI chairman Karl-Johan Gombri’s assessment that “we choose the right place at the right time,” read from a publication of the meeting entitled “The China Factor.” Prof. Wu explained: “This year’s meeting held three separate themed forums to discuss recent issues in international maritime law.” She gave an insightful analysis of the main themes, including the laws governing the Arctic and Antarctic, the management of activities at sea, the Rotterdam Rules, and the modification of theSalvage Convention. She further pointed out that China, as a major player in international trade and maritime transport, should give careful consideration to relevant international conventions in order to perfect its own domestic maritime law and protect its national economic interests.
