An Introductory Lecture on Commercial Fishery Cooperation Took Place at SCSI, Xiamen University

On May 28th, 2013, an introductory lecture on Commercial Fishery Cooperation, sponsored by the South China Sea Institute, Xiamen University and the Center for Oceans Policy and Law, Xiamen University, took place. Mr. Peter Ho, a Taiwanese fishery negotiator and consulting expert, was the lecturer. Mr. Ho graduated from the economics department at the University of Hong Kong, served as the Secretary-General of the Overseas Fisheries Development Council of Taiwan, and possess a great deal of accumulated theoretical and practical experience in fishery management.
Mr. Ho began by introducing the reasons why commercial fishery cooperation is necessary and moved on to discuss the legal basis of fishery cooperation and relevant provisions in UNCLOS. He gave a detailed analysis of the pro and cons of fisheries cooperation. Mr. Ho concluded with a summary of prior experiences in fishery cooperation.
During the lecture, attendants raised a number of thought-provoking questions which Mr. Ho patiently answered one by one. This lecture was a tremendous help for attendants hoping to better understand fishery cooperation. The event concluded with warm applause.
