The opening address was given by XMU Vice-President Sun Shigang, who said that XMU had trained hundreds of experts and researchers in oceanic studies over the past 50 years, and that the MEL is recognised as an important base for oceanography and environmental science, with its great expertise and involvement in international exchanges. He said that the summer school was a platform for promoting the ocean sciences and technology development in China. He thanked all the professors who had come to take part and said he hoped that the participants would not only gain knowledge, but also make friends.
The summer school and the PhD student forum focussed on multidisciplinary research into geo-bio-chemical interactions in the ocean and on the sea-floor. It included lectures by leading scientists, presentations by young researchers and students, and a series of activities to stimulate discussions between researchers and students. The goal was to discuss cutting-edge research subjects, to encourage and help young scientists and students in carrying out interdisciplinary research, and to promote the ocean sciences and associated technological development in China.
