It is an interdisciplinary research institution headed by the well-known Professor Kuen-chen FU and boasts researchers specializing in various fields. SCSI is dedicated to building a national-level think tank revolving around laws and policies for China seas, especially the South China Sea (SCS), primarily with the following research areas:
1. Oceans policy and law
2. Maritime delimitation and protection of maritime rights and interests
3. International relations concerning oceans
4. Navigation security and maritime law enforcement
5. Cross-strait cooperation on maritime issues
6. Marine environmental protection and resources management
7. History and geography of oceans and underwater cultural heritage
8. Historical archives on Chinese maritime boundaries
9. 21st Century Maritime Silk Road

I. Academic Areas
International Law, Law of the Sea, Oceans Policy, International Relations, Ocean History, Maritime Archaeology and other ocean-related disciplines.
II. Positions Available and Qualifications
1. Full Professorships
(1)Applicants must possess a doctoral degree or the highest-level degree in a relevant discipline and meet all other requirements according to rules and regulations of the university. They should be at the age of not more than 45.
(2)Applicants with a doctoral degree from a renowned overseas or domestic university or other research institution are preferred and must have at least five years of research experiences.
(3)Applicants must be proficient in both English and Chinese languages(or in other foreign language) and are passionate about academic work.
2. Associate Professorships
(1) Applicants must possess a doctoral degree or the highest-level degree in a relevant discipline and meet all other requirements according to rules and regulations of the university. They should be at the age of not more than 40.
(2) Applicants with a doctoral degree from a renowned overseas or domestic university or other research institution are preferred and must have at least three years of research experiences.
(3) Applicants must be proficient in both English and Chinese languages (or in other foreign language) and are passionate about academic work.
3. Assistant Professorships
(1) Essential Qualifications
a. Applicants must possess a doctoral degree from or hold a post-doctoral position in a renowned overseas or domestic university or other research institution and should fulfill other requirements according to rules and regulations of the university; they should be at the age of not more than 35.
b. Applicants must be proficient in both English and Chinese languages (or in other foreign language) and are passionate about academic work.
(2) Doctoral graduates as of the current academic year for assistant professorships may be accepted as Research-oriented Assistant Professors who are entitled to the salary and benefits of assistant professors (including housing or housing allowances). They are required to undertake full-time scientific research as post doctorates for two years, during which time teaching is not compulsory.
Doctoral graduates as of the current academic year with outstanding performance may be accepted directly as Assistant Professors according to international practices; they should undertake the work of teaching and academic research in compliance with relevant requirements of the university.
